Understanding Your Reconstructive Surgery

Free tissue transfer or free flaps is a method in which expendable tissue (skin, fat, bone or a combination) along with blood vessels is harvested from one area of the body and moved to a region of the body requiring reconstruction.

The transplanted tissue survives as it reattached to blood vessels in the recipient area through a technique called microsurgery. This involves the use of specialized techniques and equipment as these blood vessels are between 0.8 mm – 4mm in size.
