Liposuction And Fat Transfer

With Natural Fat Transfer, you get the additional benefits of Body Contouring. Liposuction is performed to remove fat from other parts of your body, such as your hips, thighs, and tummy. The fat is collected, processed, and then injected into your breasts for a customized increase in volume.

If you choose Natural Fat Transfer, it’s important to note that your body will reabsorb some of your fat within the first 6 weeks as it regains a blood supply so you may lose some initial volume. Fat grafting can also be added in addition to breast implants in primary breast surgery to create cleavage or in revision breast augmentation surgery to correct contour or volume loss.

Proper Candidates For Natural Fat Transfer

If you wish to significantly enhance the size of your breasts — more than 1 cup size— and you want a change in the shape of your breast, Dr. Avi Islur may recommend Breast Implant Surgery instead. On the other hand, if you’re looking to boost your bust line by 1 cup and do not need a shape change, a Natural Fat Transfer might be the right fit.

Ideal weight for Natural Fat Transfer surgery means that you have enough fat, preferably in your abdomen or lower back (love handles), to allow a decent amount of fat to be harvested.

With Natural Fat Transfer, the final result cannot be guaranteed. Some patients experience a 20%-40% loss of volume over the first 6 weeks due to reabsorption. Additional fat grafting sessions can be performed to gain more volume if desired.

Your immediate size change from fat transfer is a result of two processes: 1) the volume increase from the fat transferred and  2)  swelling from the procedure itself.  The fat once removed from one area of your body by liposuction is initially without a blood supply. In order to survive, the fat cells must regain a blood supply which provides it with oxygen and nutrients. As not all fat cells regain a blood supply, that portion is lost and resorbed by your body.  The portion that regains a blood supply in the first 6 weeks will thrive and survive.  It is important to minimize pressure on the breast for the first 6 weeks in order to maximize the blood flowing in the breast so it is important to avoid laying on the chest or wearing tight compression bras.

Fat cells transferred to your breast that survives like all fat cells change with weight gain or weight loss. If you lose weight after fat transfer, the fat cells size will shrink (not die) and therefore it is important that you are at an ideal weight prior to surgery.

Smoking or vaping nicotine constricts blood vessels in your body and therefore limits the blood supply and oxygen getting to your newly transferred fat cells. As a result there will be limited fat graft survival. It is important to stop all sources of nicotine (smoking or gum) a month prior and several months after surgery if considering fat grafting.

No, the good news is you cannot get capsular contracture from Natural Fat Transfer. And there’s no need for implant replacement surgery.

This is not an option unless you have an identical twin.

Yes, your Surgeon can remove your implants, and some of the volume can be replaced with your own fat. Depending on your ideal breast size, you can also replace your old implants with new ones and add a Fat Transfer to enhance the appearance. Can a breast lift be performed at the same time as Fat Transfer to my Breasts?

Yes, breast lifts can be performed at the same time; however, breast lift surgery tightens the skin and therefore decreases the “space” available for fat. This decrease in “space” can put added pressure on the fat cells which may cause an increase in fat loss. Your surgeon will discuss with you if the procedures should be staged.

Fat grafting has been used for over a decade in breast reconstruction for women with breast cancer lumpectomy defects. Therefore it has been studied very extensively. Fat grafting does not increase breast cancer risk nor does it interfere with mammograms. Oil cysts or fat necrosis which happens rarely with fat grafting can be identified on mammogram or MRIs and be differentiated from breast cancer. It must be noted that sometimes the fat graft can result in small areas of palpable changes in your breast which may lead you to undergo more mammograms or physician directed examinations than a woman without fat grafting.
